Urban agriculture: utopia outside the city and the countryside?

A series of projects and initiatives have been grouped under the heading “urban agriculture” which, although very different, pursue the same vision: that of making the city more autonomous and resilient by integrating activities from the primary sector of the economy. Without asking the technical questions that, for example, stimulate the ingenuity and imagination of many creative minds – vertical agriculture, plant roofs, aquaponics – this article states that, despite the economic upheavals of the 19th and 20th centuries, which brought the share of farmers in the Belgian labour force to less than 3%, the city’s population has become more and more diverse.
